The Wild Coastis part of the former Transkei in Eastern Cape, a homeland created by the apartheid regime where the Xhosa live. The Transkei was reunited with the rest of South Africa after the abolishment of apartheid. The difference can still be observed today, as hardly any industry or farming occurred in this part of the country during the apartheid era.
As a result, the Wild Coast has some of the most isolated beaches in South Africa. Tourists can see dolphins playing in the warm water. When you travel the Wild Coast, you will see that the coast is especially rugged to the north, which was shaped by the extreme wind and weather, with steep cliffs of black rock, large boulders, and waterfalls with drops of up to 100m directly into the sea.
The climate along the Wild Coast varies from temperate sub-tropical in the South to moderate sub-tropical further North. The combination of mountains and sea creates a temperate zone of its own which is ideally suited to winter vacations when dolphins and whales abound, but also keeps the temperature cool and comfortable in summer. Rainfall occurs mainly in the summer months.
