 You will leave the metropolis of Johannesburg behind and travel through the seemingly endless "Highveld". Only near Waterval Boven does the landscape become interesting, as you begin the descent into the lowlands of South Africa.

The relatively short stretch allows time for a leisurely trip into the park. A shop is situated at the Paul Kruger Gate, where information can be purchased about the park. The conservation levy has been paid by Umfulana.

After becoming acquainted with the varied vegetation and landscape of the southern Kruger Park, you will exit the park at Crocodile Bridge and travel parallel to the Mozambique border on the way to Swaziland. Passports and a letter of authority from the rental car company are required to cross the border.

The route runs north-south along the Lebombo Mountains. Near Golela you will cross the border to KwaZulu Natal.

 Every now and then the Indian Ocean will be visible through the waving green cane fields and eucaluptus plantations. The only town worth mentioning is Stanger, a rather uninteresting place founded more than 100 years ago by Indian cane cutters.

 Durban, the third largest city in South Africa, lies along the route. A detour can be taken to the Victorian Market, the well-known Indian market, where curry powders mixed to your own choice and craftwork from all over Africa can be purchased.

At the foot of Drakensberg you will travel through the Oliviershoek Pass into a totally different landscape: the plateau of the Free State, the country of the Boers.
