The Eastern Free State are on a main route linking the Eastern Cape and Garden Route, to KwaZulu Natal, Gauteng and Mpumalanga (Kruger Park). It also links South Africa and the mountain kingdom of Lesotho and include the towns Ladybrand, Ficksburg, Clarens and Bethlehem.
While the western parts of the Free State are characterized by an endless open landscape with large areas dedicated to maize and beef production, the east offers some of South Africa's most striking scenery. Magnificent mountain chains and sandstone formations radiate a red glow in the setting sunlight, merging with the mountains of Lesotho. Best known is the Golden Gate Resort with its reddish-gold rock mass. It is located between between Clarens and Phuthadithjaba. |
