The Golden Gate Highlands National Park in the Free State derives its name from the brilliant shades of gold cast by the sun on the parks sandstone cliffs, especially the imposing Brandwag Rock. Some of South Africa's best scenic highlights are protected in this mountainous nature reserve. It has magnificent sandstone rocks that produce a red glow in the light of the setting sun. Caves with Bushman paintings can also be found.
The Rhebuck Hiking Trail is a 9km path leading to a viewpoint from where one can see the mountainous Lesotho, the Natal Drakensberg and far into the endless open landscape of the western Free State. A scenic car route meanders through the Golden Gate Park from where one can see antelope, rock rabbits and rare bird life. Our recommendation would, however, be the hiking trails or a horse ride to view this wonderful park. |
