Although it is primarily an administrative center in Gauteng, Tshwane has important industries, especially iron and steel. Founded in 1855, the city was named after Andries Pretorius, a Boer leader. When the Union of South Africa was founded in 1910, Pretoria became its administrative and Cape Town its legislative capital. The Transvaal Museum, the National Historical Cultural Museum, and the National Zoological Gardens are all worth a visit.
The City of Tshwane plays host to numerous local, national and international sporting events. The natural features range from granite rocks to the meteorite crater - Tswaing Crater - and from grassy high veld plains to the shrub lands of the African Savannah. Few cities in South Africa have as much uncluttered and preserved land as Tshwane.
