Durban Country Club
Just to stand on the clubhouse veranda and look out over the first fairway and the pristine 18th green to the left with its undulating fairway behind, picking up the breath of the sea as it drifts in from your right, will make you lose all sense of reality and time. In all golfers' guides Durban Country Club rates as one of the finest courses in the world, let alone Africa, or even South Africa. Rated as the second best course in the Southern Hemisphere by Golf International's panel, the quality of the course can hardly be denied.

The high standards are underlined by the 462 m par 5 third hole - the most popular, most photographed, and often called the best third hole in the world, or the best par 5 in golf. No wonder Durban Country Club has hosted more South African Open Championships (14) than any other course.

The facility lies adjacent to the beach of the Indian Ocean, separated only by a freeway linking the Northern suburbs with the city. It features an ideal mix of tall trees, thick bush, steep slopes, rolling fairways that sometimes resemble waves, and a few very clever tee positions, with the penalising bunkers lying in wait.

Durban Country Club Beachwood
This course is part of Durban Country Club, situated parallel to the indian ocean. It is a very good test of golf skills with a relatively narrow design. The corse was built by Percy Gilbert Stiebel in indigenous woodland around a mangrove swamp, a narrow barrier between the Indian Ocean and houses that flow along a ridge overlooking the sea. It was considered an ideal location for a golf course at the time. Thanks to the Country Club, the mangrove swamp has been preserved as one of the last of its kind on the KwaZulu-Natal coast. The property supports an amazing variety of bird life.

Mount Edgecombe 1
A stunning course that is challenging but fair with various indigenous trees and 100 spiesies of birds. Formerly Huletts Country Club, the course has been redesigned by Hugh Baiocchi to create a memorable championship course. It has a beautiful setting in the sugar cane country on the Natal north Coast. The fairways sweep between densely massed pines, tall gum trees and beautiful shrubs. The new course has an interesting layout, characterized by attractive water features and large, multi-tiered greens planted with country club grass. The club now boasts a choice of two excellent 18 hole courses.

Accommodation: Selborne Hotel
Selborne Hotel, Spa and Golf Estate is a stately manor house surrounded by indigenous coastal forest in a tranquil setting close to the warm Indian Ocean and near Durban. A private beach club is just a few sandy footsteps away.

Selborne was created in 1985 when Denis Barker was inspired to turn his dairy farm into the first golf estate in South Africa. His intention was clear: to preserve the rich flora and fauna surrounding the manor house. Today, this sprawling Victorian mansion is the centrepiece of a family run retreat. Woven around the natural rock and contours and verdant coastal forest, the estate is home to duiker, mongoose, bushbuck and over 160 bird species. Selborne offers unparalleled natural beauty and tranquillity. The discreet yet attentive staff strive to create a "home away from home" in Africa, pampering guests with the personal service only a family-run hotel can offer.

Selborne Golf Course
The South African equivalent of Augusta National in Georgia, USA., is one of the most attractive courses in South Africa. It is a beautiful and charming estate course where the houses don't interfere with play. The course with its nice mixture of short and long holes feels very rural. There is lots of water but the hazards are not extremely confrontational. The Indian Ocean makes as a spectacular backdrop. Selbourne has developed an excellent reputation among the overseas golfing fraternity both for it's level of challenge and high standard of maintenance.

a tough test of golf
a tough test of golf

Zimbali Golf Course
The golf course runs alongside the Indian Ocean and boasts spectacular sea view from the 14th through to the 18th. This adds to the scenic beauty of the of course and compensates for the stiff coastal wind that sometimes blows causing the golfer the odd problem or two. Starting off with a coastal links feel, the course takes a dramatic turn through rough rolling wetlands and ends up in the Zimbali Coastal forest. The course is also a tough walk but fortunately golf carts are compulsory! Most of the tees are high on the side of hills or sand dunes. The fairways cut through the valley and the greens, seemingly always at the bottom of the next hill. This makes judging distance a time consuming task, especially for first those playing this golf course for the first timetimers to the course!

Prince's Grant Golf Estate
With panoramic views of the Indian Ocean, this development has been designed to capture the gracious colonial life-style of early Natal. The course architects, Matkovich & Hayes, designed the course to present challenges similar to those of traditional links course in Scotland, and the unsheltered fairways mounds and well shaped bunkers are reminiscent of the fabled links courses of Great Britain.
