The coastline which stretches 80 km north of Durban is named after a school of dolphins (500 in number) that frequents the area all year round. In August, when the sardines arrive from the south, over 10,000 dolphins can be seen feasting on the annual bounty. Dolphin safaris in small boats can be organised by Umfulana.
Moreover, the Dolphin Coast has some of the best beaches in South Africa. The warm Mozambique current allows for pleasant swimming throughout the year. Endless sandy beaches dot the coastline, and the further north you travel, the lonelier the beaches become. There are also excellent diving and surfing spots. Sugarcane farms make up the immediate hilly interior. Surrounded by these farms, some nature reserves protect the original coastal rain forests.
