Many who know this nature reserve on the border of Swaziland, call it the most beautiful in Southern Africa. It is characterised by mountains, deep valleys and untouched natural bush. Overlooking the Pongola River valley in the rugged, mountainous thornveld of Northern KwaZulu Natal, with diverse geological diversity, Itala offers a wildlife experience second to none.
Excepting lion, the park boasts rhino, elephants, buffalo, leopard, giraffe and many antelope and animal species, in an area of about 30,000kmē. A 30km road through the park offers great viewing by vehicle. A variety of accommodation is available, from luxury lodges to camping sites, and the service is far superior to that of other national reserves.
With its many perennial streams and rivers, and the frequent occurrence of cliffs and rock faces, Itala is also the ideal haven for a large variety of birds. Sightings of large birds at Itala may include black eagles, lappet faced and whitebacked vultures, ostriches and secretary birds stalking across the veld.
