The 8,800 hectare Royal Natal national park is located in the northern part of Drakensberg and lies at the foot of Mont-aux-Sources, the highest mountain in South Africa. The semi-circular amphitheater that surrounds the park is an unforgettable sight. It is a 500 m high precipice that extends for over 4 km.
The source of the Tugela River is at the top of the amphitheater. The river takes a 2 km plunge over a series of falls and cascades through a dramatic gorge to the valley floor. The longest single fall of 614 m is the highest in South Africa. The combined fall of the Tugela is 948 m, which makes it the 2nd highest fall in the world.
The view from the amphitheater is considered one of the most spectacular sights in Africa next to Kilimanjaro. The national park is an ideal place for hiking and horseback riding, and numerous walking and riding trails are marked throughout the reserve.
