Lake St. Lucia is one of the largest and most extraordinary wetland areas in Africa. Many rivers lead into the 64km long lake, which is surrounded by tropical forests, mangrove swamps and high sand dunes. Around 700 hippo and 2000 crocodile exist in the lake. Water buffalo, antelope, hyenas, and the rarely seen cheetah, roam the eastern shore.
However, this area is known mostly for its abundant bird life, which comprises in excess of 400 species. The Greater St. Lucia Wetlands Park with its unique landscape, abundance of animals, fauna and flora, which surpasses even the Kruger Park or the Okavango Delta, was declared a world heritage site at the beginning of the millennium. |
