Lesotho

Lesotho is a mountainous kingdom that is situated in the middle of the Republic of South Africa with mountain peaks that reach 3500m. Due to its altitude, Lesotho remains cooler throughout the year than other regions at the same latitude. Most of the rain falls as summer thunderstorms. Snow is common in the deserts and low valleys between May and September; the higher peaks can experience snowfalls year-round.

It is a fascinating country in which its people follow a medieval lifestyle, mostly traveling on horseback or on foot. The kingdom, which obtained its independence in 1966, has numerous caves that depict rock drawings made by Bushmen many years ago. The Nguni people later ousted the Bushmen.

Access to Lesotho from the south and east is possible by 4x4 vehicle only, especially in the rainy season in summer (October to March) when most mountain passes are not negotiable.

Those that take on an adventure to the "Roof of South Africa", will remember this beautiful and simple country for the rest of their lives.
