The Drakensberg range in KwaZulu Natal reaches into Mpumalanga and lies to the west of the Kruger National Park. It forms part of the escarpment between the highveld and lowveld area in South Africa with a drop of around 1,300 meters.
The heavy rains originating in the warm Indian Ocean formed Blyde River Canyon. This landscape is filled with waterfalls, forests, and clear streams. Blyde River is one of the beautiful and extraordinary highlights of South Africa. A road called the Panorama Route brings one to waterfalls, potholes and vantage points from which one can view the African lowlands and far into the Kruger National Park.
With its impressive scenery, The Blyde River Canyon Reserve offers visitors a remarkable experience that they will still remember long after leaving the low veld. This untouched, silent and vast area of the Blyde River Canyon is revealed best to the hiker. Hiking trails with self-catering overnight huts are available, but pre-bookings are essential. Many trails start at Bourke's Potholes. |
