The currency in South Africa is the Rand (R or ZAR – often called the “buck” by locals), which is equal to 100 cents.
The exchange rate favors international tourists since the Rand is steadily declining against the major world currencies. This means that local merchandise, cuisine, wines and entertainment etc tend to be less expensive than abroad.
Credit cards are accepted at most points of sale as well as automated banking machines (ATM’s), but NOT at petrol stations.
Travelers cheques can be exchanged at most banks, but the commission charged can differ greatly between banks. Banking hours are from 09:00 to 15:30 during the week and from 08:30 to 11:00 on Saturdays.
Value Added Tax (VAT) is levied at 14%. Overseas visitors can reclaim VAT at international airports on departure. This, however, can only be done with tangible items accompanied with a VAT invoice or slip.
It is customary to tip caddies, taxi drivers, hotel & railway porters, room maids, stewards, waiters/waitresses, tour guides & game rangers 10 to 15%. Because of poor wages, staff often rely heavily on tips for income. |
