The world-renowned Kruger National Park offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the best in Africa. Established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of the South African Lowveld, this national park of nearly 2 million hectares, SANParks - Kruger National Park is unrivaled in the diversity of its life forms and a world leader in advanced environmental management techniques and policies.
This game reserve is one of the largest and best-known reserves in the world, and is the oldest in Africa. It has a 2,2 million hectare area, is 350km long, 60km wide and has five rivers flowing through it. It has over 300 different species of trees, 50 different species of fish, 114 reptile species, ca. 500 bird species and 150 different mammals. The animal numbers alter from season to season. To give but one example of the numbers, the Kruger area has around 10 000 elephant in it.
Kruger has a subtropical climate, with summer rainfall between October and May. During this time the park transforms itself into a paradise, as flowers bloom and vegetation turns green. In the drier season, between April and September, game viewing is more favorable, as trees shed their leaves and game congregates at water pools in the dry riverbeds. |
