Accommodation: a bush lodge in Sabie Sands
This rustic bush lodge has five chalets and is one of the smallest private lodges in close proximity to Kruger National Park. The camp is situated on a riverbank overlooking a scenic plain where elephant s and other animals often gather at a nearby water hole. After a cup of coffee you will start off with a game drive at 6:30 a.m. in an open 4x4 vehicle. B reakfast is served afterwards, and at 11:00 a.m. a guided bush walk is offered which highlight s the wonderful fauna and flora of the area. A second game drive, which extends into the night, commences in the afternoon, and at sundown drinks can be enjoyed at carefully selected spots in the bush. Dinner is served in a boma around a fire under the vast African sky. Game guides accompany guests to their chalets, as the camp is not fenced in.

This lodge offers a unique wildlife experience. The likelihood of seeing the big five and other rare game at close quarters is far better than on government- owned reserves. All rooms have ceiling fans and mosquito netting. The lodge also has a swimming pool.

Guided tour to the Msinga Rural area
This guided tour is designed to introduce you to the current rural Zulu lifestyle, their history, culture and survival strategies.

The tour could include the following:
* A visit to a community garden which the guide Vic built with the Zulu people with the assistance of World Vision. He knows many people still working there. You walk to the garden along a route passing several kraals.
* A visit to a traditional Zulu home in which you can look at the layout of a kraal and how the family lives in it. The kraal consists of an extended family of 4 brothers (3 work in Johannesburg) with their wives and children, and 2 grandmothers. Vic explains various practices, (such as the burying of a family member in the cattle kraal) and the reasons these rituals are performed.
* A visit to the Church of Scotland Hospital, a former mission hospital with 200 beds, is also worth a visit. On the way you can see the traditional clothes still worn by some Zulu people. Vic explains the history of the area and also the vegetation seen.
* A visit to the Sangoma or traditional healer.
* Another option is a visit to a bead worker and craft market (started with the help of non-governmental organizations.) Handcrafts such as eggs, bangles and bowls are woven with beads threaded into copper wire.

Itineraries chosen may be adapted to include occasional traditional gatherings (generally over weekends or public holidays) featuring dancing, stick fighting and weddings (anyone is welcome). The standard tour is approx. 5 hours long and may include any four of the options outlined above.

12th day: Sani Pass

remote hut in the Mountains of Lesotho
remote hut in the Mountains of Lesotho

Excursion up the Sani Pass
The SANI PASS - the only road link between KwaZulu-Natal and the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. A 4x4 adventure into a different world - the land of the People of the Blanket. Starting at 1540m above sea level you will follow the deep valley incised by the Mkhomazana River to breast the summit at 2873m - with almost 1000m climbed in the last 8km of your trip in our 4x4 vehicles.
In SUMMER waterfalls cascade and tumble into the river below. The green slopes that sweep upward to the base of towering basalt cliffs are dotted with the colour of our great variety of flowers and the roadside is lined with flowers. Our vast floral variety, in number of species and their traditional uses, will earn this region the coveted WORLD HERITAGE SITE status. Our knowledgeable and keen guides have introduced botanists and horticulturists from all over the world to this floral wealth.
In WINTER under a cloudless sky iced falls sparkle next to the hairpin bends. This is our dry season when the early afternoon sun burnishes the dry veld to a rich gold. And there is the ever-present promise of snow.
And along the way the Tour Guides will tell you of the history of the SANI PASS - of the long-gone San people who lived and hunted here until they, too, were hunted out. Of the days of long trains of mules that plied this twisting track. And if names like Ground Woodpecker, Orangebreasted Rockjumper, Drakensberg Siskin, Gurney's Sugarbird, Bearded Vulture, Mountain pipit, strike a response in you, then you will know that this is an important site for avid birdwatchers.
