29km from Oudtshoorn, at the head of the picturesque Cango Valley, lies the spectacular underground wonder of the Klein Karoo - the Cango Caves. Situated in a limestone ridge parallel to the well known Swartberg Mountains, you will find the finest drip stone caverns, with their vast halls and towering formations.
These limestone caves, decorated by countless stalactite formations, are situated at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains and are among the biggest in the world. The San (Bushman) people inhabited the entrance cave for centuries and painted pictures of animals on the walls.
The first white man to discover the caves in 1780 was a Boer, van Zyl. The main hall was named after him and is 70m long, 35m wide, and 17m high. Over 1000 people can be seated in this hall, and it is often utilized for concerts on account of its fantastic acoustics. More caves, leading from the main hall, were discovered in 1972, but these may not be entered by the general public, owing to their ecological sensitivity. |
