Dangerous seas, unpredictable currents, dense fog, and rocky shores mark South Africa's coastline from Cape Cross to Cape St Lucia. Cape Agulhas was South Africa's second permanent light station, established in 1849, at the southern-most tip of Africa.
Cape Agulhas (34°50' latitude) is the southernmost point of Africa, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. This area has some of the richest marine life in the world. The second oldest light tower in South Africa can also be viewed at Cape Agulhas. Hotagterklip, a romantic fishing town and popular theme used by many South African artists, lies only a few kilometres to the north. Today, the station also serves as a fascinating lighthouse museum, the first of its kind on the African continent. |
