The gigantic Cedarberg mountain range with a length of 100km and a height of 2028m (Sneeukop) is situated between Ceres in the south and Clanwilliam in the north. From Cape Town it is a short two-hour journey to the north.
The landscape is characterised by forested valleys, red coloured bizarre rock formations and caves with Bushman paintings. 71,000 hectare of this mountain range is now a nature conservation area. Many hiking trails, varying in difficulty, lead through this expanse. The climate is dry and warm.
The Cedarberg Mountains lie north of Cape Town, approximately two hours drive. Once over the Piekenierskloof pass, you descend into a different world: the country has changed: wilder, warmer with a raw, dramatic beauty. The towering Cedarberg mountains, brilliant purple in the late afternoon light, preside over a fruit-filled valley laden with the scent of orange blossom in the spring. |
