This nature reserve protects the unique Cape flora: Fynbos (Cape Macchia). The reserve has the largest variety of flora, including species from all six floral regions in the world, confined in the smallest area. More than 600 different erika species, 400 different silver tree species and 85 protea species are registered.
About 30 km of pristine coastal landscape with secluded sandy beaches and fascinating caves can be explored. Guided tours are offered daily. They are particularly informative due to the fact that they focus on conservation issues and not too much on tourism. Boat trips into the bay are offered from July to mid-December for a close view of whale births.
Grootbos Nature Reserve is located close to Hermanus. This city is built along the shores of Walker Bay near the Southern most tip of Africa.
