At one stage the Karoo was the biggest linked ecosystem in South Africa. Large herds of game roamed this area following the sparse rain. The introduction of agriculture, predominantly sheep farming, brought fences to the area and altered the Karoo. The Karoo National Park protects an impressive area of pristine vegetation, and lies about 500km east of Cape Town, north of the N1.
The colorful reflections of the setting sun and the view into the never-ending horizon are especially beautiful. The hiking trail named Springbok extends over 2 nights and 3 days. Two further nature trails (1km and 11km) with informative plaques enlighten the visitor about the area. The park also offers 4x4 trails and bird viewing sites. 4x4 vehicles can be hired in Beaufort West, a town in the vicinity.
Night drives are available to view the nocturnal game. Towards late afternoon, the great, unyielding canopy slowly softens its fierceness, and from pastel shades of pink and blue, the colors deepen, setting the endless Karoo canvas ablaze with glorious hues of orange and red.
