The capital of the Dauphiné is situated at the intersection of three deeply carved valleys. Originally founded by the Celts, the city was successively occupied by Burgundians, Franks and the Dauphins. Since 1349 it has a university. In 1968 the Winter Olympics were held here and in 1992 just a few kilometers further down the road in Albertville. The high alpine region of the Dauphiné is located on the beautiful Routes des Grandes Alpes, which connects the Cote d'Azur with the Mediterranean.
