The Hanseatic city is located at the Strelasund, a strait of the Baltic Sea. As the “Gateway to the Island of Rügen” it is connected to the island via two bridges. With just under 60,000 inhabitants, Stralsund is Mecklenburg's fourth largest city.In 1234 it received the town charter and was soon a founding member of the Hanseatic League, which brought in its wealth and prosperity. The magnificent old town in the style of brick Gothic bears witness to this. Today, the characteristic gabled houses are mainly located in Mönchstrasse, Ossenreyer and Mühlenstrasse. Stralsund is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
